Durable Water Repellency (DWR)
Most outerwear is treated with an ultra-thin coating called
DWR. This coating causes water to bead up and roll off the fabric instead of being
absorbed.
Eventually the DWR can be worn off the garment by normal
use. The rain no longer beads up on the fabric. This is referred to as 'wet out'. The
outer fabric can then become saturated with rain. The wearer may feel damp and clammy due
to the conductive and evaporative heat loss from the body to the garment. 'Wet out' may
even cause condensation to form on the inside of the garment, and the wearer will perceive
that the garment is leaking. So, Good DWR maximizes comfort.
If your outer wear can be washed and tumble dried, then the
DWR coating can be totally restored, just like new.
When water no longer beads on the garment, then treat it
